What is Cloisonné?
Cloisonné (shippo-yaki) is a traditional metal craft made by applying vitreous glaze onto silver or copper and firing it at around 750°C.
Kyoto cloisonné (Kyo Shippo) blossomed during the vibrant Azuchi-Momoyama period, supported by the refined metalworking techniques of Kyoto artisans. It adorned palaces, castles, shrines, and temples as prized decorative art.
With more than 100 glaze colors available, layers are carefully applied and repeatedly fired, creating the unique textures and rich depth of color that define cloisonné. Its glass-like surface and brilliant shine never fade, offering timeless beauty.
Please take this opportunity to experience the elegance of Kyo Shippo.
Hands-On Cloisonné Workshop
The shop also offers cloisonné-making experiences (reservations recommended).
