A shrine located on Shirakawa, a small mountain in Uji city, that is said to give out spiritual power to people. A village shrine of Konjikiin, which used to be very solemn back in the Heian period.
Shirakawa, where amazing sights of nature are still preserved, is 5 minutes by car from the central part of Uji city. It is where Fujiwara Yorimichi’s daughter, Hiroko, built Konjikiin, which was covered in gold, in the Heian period. It has been told that there were many pagodas and monks’ houses around. Hakusan Shrine is a village shrine of Konjikiin, and many people prayed here to avoid lightnings, fix bad teeth, and heal smallpox. The worship house has an atmosphere of a normal housing and is said to be the remains of the detached place of Uji and designated as an important cultural property of Japan. The main shrine behind the worship house is a “Ichigensha-nagarezukuri-hiwadabuki (a traditional architectural style of Japan)” style building.
