A “cultural property of ancient Kyoto” (world heritage) that preserves the building, buddha statues, drawings, and gardens from the late Heian period.

In 1052, Kanpaku Fujiwarano Yorimichi received a guest house from his father, Michinaga, and turned it into a temple (what is now Byodoin Temple). In the year after that, Amidado (what is now Phoenix Hall (Hou-ou-do)) was built, and Amidanyorai statue, which was made by Jocho, the best buddhist image sculptor in the Heian period, was placed inside. A temple and buddhist images that were built approximately 1,000 years ago were passed onto today’s world and are designated as a world heritage.
